12/24 Christmas in DC

On 12/23 we flew to DC to spend Christmas with the Eastcoast Lynns and Hansel's mom and stepdad. The flight there went pretty well. Mathis slept almost 3 hrs! I could have watched a movie, but alas we didn't bring any headphones.

We got in at night, and the kids didn't get ready for bed til pretty late (but actually at a reasonable west coast time). The first night we tried to put Maile, Beck, and their cousin Tabitha in one air bed in Tabitha's bedroom. At one point, Tabitha decided she had enough of Maile and Beck and crawled into her own bed. Later Anita heard Tabitha crying and went in and found Maile and Beck peering over the footboard staring at their crying cousin. No attempt to find Anita or console Tabitha.

Anita was the best host. She had something planned practically everyday. She even drew up a calendar, literally (it was drawn by hand). So the next day, the plan was for the kids to go out sledding before the snow melted. Normally when we're out there for Christmas, there isn't any snow. But a storm had passed through right before we got there.

We walked over to a hill behind a neighbor's house. Maile and Beck are being carried because they didn't have snow shoes, which will have consequences later.
Maile loved it. Beck did it once with Hansel, and once on his own. And then he was done. When he went down on his own, he used a saucer, which tends to spin around. I think that's what did it in for him.

I went back to the house first. By the time Maile came back she realized her feet were freezing. Her ankles were super red from the cold. Suffice to say, she was not interested in going sledding for the rest of the trip.

After unwinding from sledding, Hansel and the kids made up some songs. It's nice to have a musical husband.

Later Hansel went for a walk and took some photos with a tripod and a remote. Here's one he took of himself.
Anita's family as well as a cousin came over for Christmas Eve dinner. It was delicious. Anita was conscientious about our diet and had a seafood dish as well as a meat dish. Beck had a great time that night pushing around big trucks with one of Anita's nephews.

12/20 Small Holiday Brunch

We've been slowly inviting people over to our new home in Palo Alto. On 12/20 we had the Chews, the Hews, and the Yaus over for brunch. Since it was close to Christmas, I decided to make a Christmas-themed brunch. Themes help me focus my menu. I made Christmas morning pie (an egg dish in a pie crust with red and green peppers), gingerbread pancakes, and mini cranberry-orange muffins. No photos of the food, so you'll have to trust me when I say everything turned out okay. I didn't burn down the kitchen, and noone had to make a run for the bathroom.

Below are a couple of photos of Alex and Roberta's daughter, Danica.

Yes, we still had a pumpkin leftover from Halloween.

12/22 I Wanna Play!

I think the first place Mathis started pulling himself up with was Beck's train table. Now it's not uncommon for us to hear Beck or Maile asking us to take Mathis away. Below Mathis is trying to get in on the action.

12/18 Beck's Christmas Performance

Maile's class only had winter activities planned for the Friday morning before winter break; however, Beck's school had Christmas performances and class potlucks scheduled. So Hansel and I both went to Beck's performance. We went separately, so Hansel could go back to work and I could attend the potluck.

The boys were supposed to stand on the top step while the gals stood below, but Beck kind of got caught in the middle.

Below was taken after the performance. I was tickling Beck to get him to smile. Got more of a grimace.

While some parents were getting the potluck set up, the Chinese teacher led the kids in some Chinese songs.

I brought a booster seat for Mathis to sit in and eat his lunch. He did pretty well but eventually met his threshold and wanted OUT!

After the potluck the kids participated in a gift exchange. Each kid brought in a $5 gift. When his/her name was pulled, s/he could select a gift. A few of the kids wanted to pick the gift they brought in. Beck noticed that one of the gifts was trains, and he waited patiently as each kid was called. At one point, it looked like another boy was going to pick the trains. Beck jumped up, but luckily the boy picked something else. Finally, Beck was called, and he got the trains.

12/15 Fantasy of Lights

The evening of 12/15 we put the kids in their pjs and took them to see the Fantasy of Lights at Vasona Park in Los Gatos, our second year in a row. Once we got in the park we let Maile and Beck get out of their seats and stick their heads out the sunroof. I put Mathis on my lap.

Shaking Heads

No, this is not going to be about a new band Hansel's forming. These are a couple of videos of Mathis and his recent fondness for shaking his head, although he hasn't been doing it lately, and a video of Maile doing the same around 14 months.

Random December Photos

Below are random photos from December.

That's the foot part of Maile's sleeper in Mathis' hand. He loves crawling under chairs and tables these days.

Mathis was holding on to the balloon the whole time he was eating his beans.

Mathis: "Hey, I've got a Beck on my head."

Who needs toys when I have a recycling box I can play with.

12/12 Aquarium of the Bay

On Saturday, 12/12, we had to go to the city to take care of some business. So we decided to use the opportunity to take the kids to the Aquarium of the Bay at Pier 39. I had actually never been there. It's a small aquarium but enjoyable. I really like the clear underwater tunnels, which is probably why I was so impressed by the Shanghai aquarium. Below is the only photo from that day. I think Hansel took this through a window.

12/8 Never Too Old

Later that day I decided to pull out some of the kids old toys for Mathis. One of the toys was the ball popper. As you can see in the photo below, Maile had not outgrown the toy. Oh, what joy.

12/8 Christmas Decorations

Since we were planning to spend Christmas in DC with the Eastcoast Lynns, we did not get a real tree. Instead we put up our 4-ft plastic tree and decorated it with lights, ornaments, and garland. The kids loved decorating.

After they decorated the tree, they put the ornaments on our small wooden centerpiece tree.

Dai Maozi

In an earlier entry, I wrote about how Mathis likes to put things over his head (http://hanselandlisa.blogspot.com/2009/12/fun-with-cups.html). He still does it. On this day (12/3), it was a container lid.

Thanksgiving Week at Disney - Part III

With two days of Disney parks behind us, Hansel looked into an inexpensive activity we could do in the morning and save Disney for the afternoon and evening. We planned to have the kids stay up to experience "the snow" and to see the fireworks at Disney.

Hansel found a place called Pretend City in Irvine --http://www.pretendcity.org/. It's a mini play city for kids that has amongst other things a grocery store, doctor's office, restaurant, beach, house, farm. When we are at home, Maile and Beck are inseparable. But when we take them to a museum or playground, they often go their own ways. Beck got into Pretend City right away -- going from one area to the next. Maile took a little while to warm up. We started in the arts and crafts room. But once she realized in order to get "paid" they needed to get stamps at different stations, she really got into it. She liked the "farm" area the best.

We had lunch at the Irvine Spectrum Center, a huge outdoor mall that even has a carousel. We ate at a place called The Veggie Grill -- http://www.veggiegrill.com/. It has a casual modern decor and an appetizing menu. We so wish there was one in the Bay Area.

After naptime we went to Disney. We stayed late enough for the kids to experience "the snow," foam they spray into the air, and see the fireworks. We watched the fireworks from the plaza area between Disneyland and California Adventure so we wouldn't get stuck in the mass exodus when the fireworks ended. The snow photo below was taken with my flashless phone (not bad, huh?).

We drove home Thanksgiving Day and had dinner at Panda Express.

Thanksgiving Week at Disney - Part II

Since we had the 3-day park hopper passes, we could enter the park an hour earlier on Tuesday, so we got there by 7:30. 7:00 would have been too ambitious. We went straight to the Small World ride, which was decked out for the winter holidays. Suffice to say, there was no line. In the below photo, the few people standing next to the umbrella is the extent of the line.

Since we were kids, the park has incorporated some favorite Disney characters into the ride.
The boat behind us only had one family.
Below you can see some of the holiday decor. You can compare this to the photo I took of this section the last time. https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1R3v_Bztv_zcumh3QGdJYjeUv6njeGk6r2LbfPa6ywCrxAM4YcmamrNbGkYZ7_KQ2LZfIiROb74UH7xwDeDRG1hTM4IiSgfx7JDP3OpMg0yhVtnnUIINVAeql1yjsXW_NQ4oBQ4QhY0Q2/s1600-h/20090624SmallWorldInside.bmp
We then headed over to New Orleans and Frontierland since we hadn't explored those areas much during our last trip in June. We took a log raft over to Tom Sawyer's Island, which was a lot of fun -- exploring a fort, bridges, treehouse, caves, and tunnels. I kind of freaked out at one point when Beck and Maile got separated at the caves and tunnels, and we couldn't find Beck.
We waited for a short while to see a Princess and the Frog parade and performance. They danced through New Orleans and then got on the Ferryboat and sang and danced from there. They even had the alligator character, Louis. Regular folks got to join in on the action. They wore costumes and waved props. They're holding the notes in the first photo and wearing yellow robes in the second.
In the afternoon, we went to California Adventure. The last time we went to California Adventure I missed the Bug's Life section because I was waiting in line for the Toy Story ride. So we took the kids there first. We went on one ride and then saw the 4D movie. I thought Beck would get scared during the movie since he didn't like a lot of the rides, but he was fine.

We then headed over to the studio lot area and saw the Playhouse Disney show. We saw Mulan the last time. For the show, they used puppets for the characters (vs using people), so they looked like they do on TV. But the puppets were kind of hard to see from the floor. The kids enjoyed it, esp. the bubbles and streamers.
California Adventure was also decorated for Christmas.
A couple of photos of Mathis from this day. The second we used on our holiday card.

That night we had dinner with Linda, an old Stanford friend. She's expecting a girl in late February (on my actual birthday but I don't want to make this about me :p ).
